Maclean’s Top Universities in Canada 2016


Do your homework before applying to university!  Check out the 2016 Maclean’s University Rankings, which ranks universities according to certain categories.  Their ranking systems are based on extensive research into student experience, class size, cost, quality of education etc.  Maclean’s is a reliable source of information and even includes photo tours of university campuses.

Comprehensive Universities:

Simon Fraser University (SFU) still holds the top rank position in this category, but University of Victoria and Waterloo swapped positions (now #2 and #3 respectively).  However, it’s Guelph that holds the #1 Student Satisfaction ranking.
Here are the Top 10 Comprehensive:

  1. SFU
  2. Waterloo
  3. Victoria
  4. Carleton
  5. Guelph
  6. New Brunswick
  7. Memorial
  8. York
  9. Ryerson
  10. Concordia

Primarily Undergraduate

In this category, University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) took the #1 position from Mount Allison, followed by Trent in 2nd place.  The Maritimes figured strongly in this category, with 5 universities in the Top 10.
Here are the Top 10 Undergraduate:

  1. UNBC
  2. Trent
  3. Lethbridge
  4. Mount Allison
  5. Acadia
  6. St Francis Xavier
  7. St Mary’s
  8. UPEI
  9. Lakehead
  10. UOIT

Bishop’s just missed the Top 10 in 2016, but came in at #1 for Student Satisfaction.


No change in the Top 3 from last year – McGill ranks #1 for the 11th year in a row, followed by the University of Toronto and then University of British Columbia in 3rd place. Queen’s is in 4th place, and top for Student Satisfaction, UAlberta in 5th.
